About scenarios planning

Scenarios planning is a technique for developing business strategies that are resilient to future changes and uncertainties. Scenarios are plausible stories about how the future might unfold. They are not predictions, but rather hypotheses about the ways that things outside our control – politics, regulations, the economic, markets, and the environment – might evolve and interact in the future in ways that affect our businesses. In a facilitated scenarios process, several break-out groups spend time “living in” alternative future scenarios, then come back together as a group to identify strategies that work across scenarios. The point of a scenarios process is to arrive a a deeper understanding of how the world in which our businesses operate might change, and to use that understanding to inform strategies that we can implement in the short run to make our businesses more resilient in the long run. As a result of a participating in a scenarios process, a business can expect to have a greater understanding of what strategies to employ to protect itself against the unforeseen.

While a scenarios process is typically carried out within a single organization or business, this scenarios workshop will engage multiple businesses that represent Rhode Island’s fishing industry as a whole — a collection of hundreds of independent businesses that can be thought of as a super-organization. The process will focus on sources of uncertainty that apply to many different segments of the fishing industry, from quahoggers to offshore boats to fuel suppliers to seafood dealers, and everyone in between, and will generate cross-cutting resilience strategies to support the entire industry.
